Why should I replace my forklift's tires?

Ensuring that you have the right tire for your application, which is free of cracks and wearing, will not only increase safety but it is one of the main factors in the overall performance and increased productivity of your forklift.

Replacing your forklift tires before the traction is worn ensures that your vehicle will operate safely, allowing enough traction so your forklift can come to a complete stop. Tire wear decreases the tires diameter thereby reducing its circumference. A worn down tire will turn more to cover a given distance thereby increasing fuel consumption while reducing speed. The larger the tire's diameter, the higher the forklift is off of the ground giving you more clearance and preventing the possibility of costly carriage and fork damage. Furthermore, forklift tires are the only shock absorber on the truck, it is important that they be replaced before the suspension is lost to prevent possible back injuries to operators.

A general rule of thumb to determine if your tires need to be replaced is to see if the tire wear reaches just above the imprinted area with the brand name and the size of the tire. Most, but not all tires brands will also have a wear bar indicator.

While inspecting your tires if you notice any cracks, splits or the tread is almost gone and the tires are smooth they need replacing. For cushion tires you should also replace the tire if you see signs of tire separation from its band.
