Kalmar is continuing to expand in the field of heavy handling equipment with the launch
of a completely new series of 5- to 9-ton fork-lift trucks (FLTs). This latest investment in
product development will cement its position as the leading global supplier of products
and services for container handling, heavy industrial handling and trailer logistics.

Kalmar’s Managing Director, Christer Granskog, comments on the company’s growth in
the industrial handling segment:

“In recent years we have expanded our container handling business significantly, both
through acquisitions and by virtue of organic growth, so that we are now the world leader
in the field. We have also consolidated our position in the heavy industrial field and,
bearing in mind that Kalmar has its roots in industrial handling, we have sound
experience and expertise within the company. This is an important resource that gives us
profound insight into this sector’s demanding handling requirements. Our ambition is to
grow further and we intend to do this by offering the best products and the best service in
the market.”

An expanding product portfolio
In 2002 Kalmar launched a completely new medium-weight truck, with a 9- to 18-ton
lifting capacity. It is now launching a complete series in the weight class below this.
Explains Leif Wallin, Manager, Kalmar Industrial Systems:

“The launch of our new series of 5- to 9-ton trucks is an important part of our expansion.
It provides excellent breadth, ranging from the Premium model to a more basically
equipped model that will give us the opportunity to reach customers in new markets.”

“A comprehensive range of versatile and powerful products is important to our industrial
customers. We are involved in the entire logistics chain: during production, at the
warehouse and in transportation. Our most important product is the counterweight truck,
which ranges in lifting capacity from 5 to 50 tons, but terminal tractors, reachstackers and
specialist machines are also included in the series.”

Various applications
Kalmar’s customers are to be found in all types of industrial operations, explains Mr
Wallin:

“We offer solutions for heavy handling of goods that are not in containers and various
forms of loose goods. Examples of industries in which we are traditionally very strong
are sawmills, paper mills, stone handling, steelworks and concrete. But we are seeing
substantial growth in all types of manufacturing industry, including indoor handling. We
are one of the few suppliers that can offer electric trucks with a 9-ton capacity – machines
that also provide efficient handling where absolutely no exhaust emissions can occur.”

New markets
Kalmar occupies a strong position in the heavy industrial activities of the Nordic
countries and Northern Europe. In recent years the company has further consolidated its
distribution network and increased its market share in this region, thanks in part to the
introduction of the medium-weight trucks. Says Mr Wallin:

“Our emphasis is on expansion in markets where we have not previously been as strong.
Southern Europe, the US, Asia and Australia are regions in which we are now investing,
partly by introducing products adapted to their requirements. Expert on-site servicing is,
of course, an absolute necessity.”

Service and solutions focus
Kalmar continues to evolve from simply being a product manufacturer to becoming a
supplier of integrated solutions. It has now taken over the entire handling process for
several customers, including ownership of the machinery, and can offer many different
types of comprehensive financial packages, explains Mr Wallin:

“Our products are becoming an increasingly important part of customers’ production and
transport systems. Total availability of those products imposes huge demands on the
functioning of our package of machinery, servicing and maintenance. Thanks to our vast
experience in a number of different industrial applications we can produce tried-and-
tested solutions and programmes that give our customers better total economies.”
